Dr. Scharfman has been in practice for nearly 25 years. During that time, he has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures. He’s been the Director of the Division of Ophthalmology at Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center for more than a decade.
Education & Honors
A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Scharfman received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was then awarded a scholarship to the New York Medical College where he was named a New York Medical College Scholar and was a recipient of the Cor Et Manus Award.
Dr. Scharfman completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital. He performed his residency training in Ophthalmology at the New York Medical College, and was named Chief Resident of the Department of Ophthalmology at Westchester County Medical Center.
An Advocate for His Patients
Dr. Scharfman has served as a volunteer Clinical Instructor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry (now Rutgers Medical School). He has trained many medical students and emergency room personnel.
A past President of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Scharfman continues to serve on the Board of Governors of the organization. In this capacity he has been an active advocate for patients’ rights and safety.
A strong proponent of eye care education, Dr. Scharfman truly believes that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Additionally, Dr. Scharfman participates in patient education and outreach by providing free eye disease screenings throughout the community and lecturing on topics such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.
