What’s the Difference Between a Vision Screening and an Eye Exam?

Many people are confused about the difference between a vision screening and an eye examination. Allow this post to shed some light on the key differences.

Vision Screenings

A vision screening is a short evaluation that may indicate the possibility of a vision problem.

A vision screening is not a diagnostic tool. The vision screener may suggest that an appointment should be made with an Ophthalmologist or Eye M.D. for a more comprehensive examination.

Vision screenings are sometimes offered at local senior centers or health fairs.

Eye Examinations

An eye examination lasts longer than a vision screening and includes a health and medication history in addition to questions specifically regarding your vision.

The doctor conducts the following tests during an eye examination:

  • A dilated examination to observe the retina and optic nerve
  • A test of the fluid pressure within the eyes
  • Refraction or visual acuity testing

Visual field and other testing might also be done, depending on the circumstances.
